Help a Student Compete in Commercial Roofing

The Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) and National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) are working together to help Virginia CTE instructors and students participate in the 2027 SkillsUSA Commercial Roofing competition.

You don't need an established roofing program or extensive roofing experience to get a student involved.

NRCA provides roofing-specific curriculum, training resources and technical expertise, while VARP helps connect schools with local roofing professionals who can support instructors and students with hands-on training and competition preparation.

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION?

Commercial Roofing is an individual SkillsUSA competition focused on the installation of a thermoplastic single-ply roofing system.

Students demonstrate skills that include:

• Proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Positioning and rolling out thermoplastic roofing membrane
• Mechanically attaching membrane to the roof deck
• Completing perimeter/edge-wall flashing
• Flashing around a box and pipe boot
• Following proper roofing installation and safety practices

The competition also includes a roofing knowledge exam aligned with NRCA's TRAC: Thermoplastic Roof Membrane Installation training.

HOW WILL MY STUDENT LEARN THESE SKILLS?

NRCA provides the curriculum — and students do not need to complete the entire program to participate in SkillsUSA.

NRCA makes its comprehensive TRAC: Thermoplastic Roof Membrane Installation training available FREE to U.S. CTE schools. The full program includes up to 20 hours of online instruction and 20 hours of hands-on training.

For SkillsUSA preparation, instructors and students can focus on the portions of the training most relevant to the competition. NRCA and VARP can help identify those areas and provide additional technical and hands-on support.

The goal is not to add a 40-hour course to your schedule. It's to give an interested student the knowledge, practice and industry support needed to compete successfully.

• Access to NRCA's thermoplastic roofing curriculum and training resources
• Understanding the SkillsUSA Commercial Roofing competition
• Connections with roofing industry professionals
• Hands-on thermoplastic installation practice
• Technical questions and competition preparation
• Guidance throughout the process

The instructor remains the student's school and SkillsUSA point of contact. NRCA and VARP help provide the roofing resources, expertise and industry connections needed to prepare.

WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL/INSTRUCTOR NEED TO DO?

Getting started is simple:

1. Identify a student interested in learning commercial roofing and competing.
2. Let VARP know you're interested. We'll help connect you with NRCA resources and industry support.
3. Work with your school's SkillsUSA chapter/advisor on student eligibility and registration.
4. Provide time for training and hands-on practice leading up to the competition.

2027 COMPETITION INFORMATION

The official SkillsUSA Commercial Roofing Technical Standards establish the competition's technical skills, clothing/PPE, equipment and other requirements.

Additional 2027 Virginia competition dates, registration information and state-specific requirements will be shared with participating instructors as they become available.
